The only close competition at last night's Garfield-Franklin game was between the cheerleaders. Toward the end of the 95-74 Franklin blowout, the Quaker cheerleaders called Garfield's out. The Garfield girls responded with--we don't know what to call it--a flying crotch crunch? Four Bulldog cheerleaders jumped in the air, did the splits in the air, held the splits as they descended and SMACK landed on their hoo-has. The crowd went wild.
Franklin's cheerleaders responded with the timeworn "1,2,3,4/What the hell you cheerin' for?/You're losin' (clap clap) You're losin'."
Ouch. As for the game, warmups were our highlight. "Chin Hang Low" by Jibbs was blaring, the players were showing off, we'd just had a tasty sandwich at Blue Star.
But then our beloved alma mater (Garfield) lost the battle for Lorenzo Romar's heart (he sat on the Franklin side) and got obliterated in the game.
Franklin rode two Venoy Overton threes to an 18-0 run to start the game, and after that it was pretty ugly. Garfield went small and closed within 9 during the third quarter, but Franklin blew it open to take a 21 point lead at the end of 3. Overton, who'll play at USC next season, finished with 31 points.
Garfield super soph Aaron Dotson was a non-factor, missing some easy layups and, in the words of our companion, "falling down more than D-Wade."
The Bulldogs' guard play was iffy, they made many turnovers and weren't able to get into their offense. They have a sophomore guard, De'Andre Taylor, who's fast and can penetrate, but he can't dish or run a fast break. Which is pretty much par for the course with a sophomore guard. He'll need to improve for the Bulldogs to have a chance at a championship season.
Franklin is just a whirr of smart basketball players who are also great athletes, they pass well, take good shots, and play terrific defense. Garfield was simply outclassed.
In other games, Chief Sealth, who's awe-inspiringly dedicated coach the P-I profiled yesterday, got an important win over defending state champs Seattle Prep. Ballard's Nigel Peter-Denman scored 29 in the Beavers' win over Woodinville, and Roosevelt beat Juanita. Yes, basketball season is the time when the Seattle schools avenge the beatings they all took from the Eastside schools during football season.

I think the Garfield Cheerleaders need to figure out how to work a Kenny G slur into their routine.
