Kasper Hauser And Dusty Warren Are Really Funny
Great comedy minds regulary rave about sketch comedy group Kasper Hauser so we felt we were in good hands going in to Thursday's night's show at Re-bar.
In town to promote their new book Sky Maul: Happy Crap You Can Buy From a Plane, Kasper Hauser weaves their sketch character's in and out of CEO presentations for the fledgling SkyMaul corporation. Each speech includes some of the humorous catalogue items from the book. It makes for a much more humorous book tour than Barack Obama's snorefest.
Between presentations were traditional sketch situations, a relationship in trouble, a game show, and monks. However, this group actually keeps them funny throughout. The jokes and situations are solid, the pacing perfect, and the silly never gets in the way of the wacky. The final scene, where the winning CEO is announced in genuinely hilarious and one of the funnierst things we have seen a group do in a long, long time.
Dusty Warren opened the night with an abbreviated version of his brilliant one man show, All-American Push Party. Having seen the show several times, we enjoyed the two new video segments where the bike cop and juggling busker are taken out into the city. For pure laughs-per-minute (and those drawings), we enjoy his prison guard character the most, however, the bee-keeper is growing on us. We admire how he can get the audience to laugh hysterically at the character, while at the same time sympathetically reaching out to comfort him.
The problem with sketch comedy is it's hard to make people laugh for fifty minutes. Many shows start with a strong opening sketch only to drag through a series of predictable situations. Kasper Hauser and Warren make you laugh throughout, with fresh unique jokes, and strong characters. They have a very good understanding about what is funny, and how to get there.
They reminded us why truly great sketch comedy makes us happy all over our body.
