Aural Pleasures (11/28 - 12/4)

Here's to the ice melting away because there are some good shows this week.
Tuesday 28th
>>> Cat Power at the Showbox. Chan Marshall plays the piano and sings. Our heart breaks. That's just how it is. She's on NPR, too.
*mp3: The Greatest
8pm doors; tickets $30 at the door.
>>> The Lemonheads at The Crocodile. Evan Dando's spent the last few years focusing on drugs solo work, but now he's brought back the Lemonheads because he says he grew "sick of selling solo t-shirts." We're just looking to hear what this new "louder, faster" Lemonheads will bring to The Croc.
8pm doors; $18adv/$20dos.
>>> The Dears at Neumo's. Just because Murray Lightburn is African-Canadian and belts morose statements like "I hang out with all the pariahs" for a Britpop-tinged orchestral rock band does not make him the "Black Morrissey." Oh, wait....
*mp3: Whites Only Party
9pm; $12.
Thursday 30th
>>> The Long Winters, Tapes 'n Tapes and "Awesome" at the Husky Union Building. We have a crush on every one of these bands. Which is why we're sad we can't go.
7pm; $16. All ages. Buy tickets at the HUB or here.
>>> The Little Ones at Neumo's. These guys are poppy and catchy to the exxxxxtreme.
*mp3: Lovers Who Uncover
9pm; $8adv/$10dos.
Friday, December 1st
>>> Amy Millan at The Triple Door. Amy Millan rose to fame as part of Stars, but is touring now in support of Honey From the Tombs, an album filled with songs about "little deaths" that blends the indie, country, and pop worlds. With that voice she could be singing showtunes and we'd be in the crowd swooning all the same.
*mp3: Skinny Boy
8pm doors; $12.50adv/$15dos.
Saturday 2nd
>>> Binary Star at Chop Suey. We've touted the mic-controlling skills of OneBeLo before, and we hold to that. He's now back in town to perform as one half of Binary Star, who have reunited after a long breakup over "creative differences."
8pm doors; $12adv. All ages.
>>> Gob Iron, feat. Jay Farrar and Anders Parker at The Tractor. Jay Farrar is only one of the greatest alt.country singer/songwriters from supergroup Son Volt. Now he's touring with his other band Gob Iron, who rock almost as much as Son Volt, but with a much more fun name to say. Anders will open, followed by a Jay Farrar solo set and ending with Gob Iron.
*mp3: Death's Black Train
9pm; $16.
Sunday 3rd
>>> Prefuse 73 at Chop Suey. Prefuse 73 makes the kind of hiphop that stretches your notion of what the term even means, using beats as brushes and electronic sounds as paint to craft his aural masterpieces.
8pm doors; $12adv. 21+.
>>> Wolfmother at The Moore. Lead singer and guitarist Andrew Stockdale is a vocal chameleon who looks kinda like Malcolm Gladwell if you squint hard enough. Speaking of squinting, every time we listen to Wolfmother we're instantly transported back to high school and those heady days of pot smokin' in the VW Vanagon while listening to Sabbath and Zeppelin. Yes, we're old.
*mp3: Woman
8pm doors; $23adv SOLD OUT but you can get taken on Craigslist if you're into that kind of thing.
Monday 4th
>>> Joanna Newsom at the Showbox. Watch lovely Joanna play melodic otherworldly tunes on the harp till her fingers bleed. Opener is Bill Callahan of Smog fame.
*mp3: Cosmia
8pm doors; $15.
