9 Overtimes: State Playoff Game Saturday Tied National Record
Bothell High's head football coach was "clutching his chest and wiping away tears" after a 9-OT state quarterfinal Saturday in Bothell. And his team won.
The nine overtimes were a state record, and tied a national record. The game was tied 14-14 after regulation (there had been 17 punts), but the final score ended up being 43-40 after nine sudden death overtime periods:
OT 1 (both teams start at their opponent's 25): Both teams kicked field goals (17-17).
OT 2: Bothell went four-and-out, Pasco fumbled (17-17).
OT 3 (now both teams start at their opponent's 10): Pasco had two plays inside the two, but couldn't score on either. Bothell fumbled (17-17).
OT 4: Both teams kicked field goals (20-20).
OT 5: Both teams kicked field goals (23-23).
OT 6: Bothell didn't score. Pasco missed an easy field goal (23-23).
OT 7: Pasco passed for a touchdown. Bothell got a 2-yard touchdown run on fourth down (30-30).
OT 8: Both teams scored touchdowns (37-37)
OT 9: Pasco kicked a field goal. Bothell scored on their first play, a fullback dive for 10 yards (43-40 final).
The Tri-Cities Columbian described the Pasco locker room as "deathly silent." Lord only knows how they got through the four-hour (at least) bus ride back over Snoqualmie Pass to Eastern Washington.
