Mars Hill Protest Organizers Respond!
Ok, our little shout-out to the organizers of the Mars Hill direct action earlier today worked, and we're sorry to be so pushy about it, but we're glad it worked. We should have done that days ago.
We wrote to the people behind "People Against Fundamentalism" and they've responded:
Who are you? Do you count yourself as a member of a congregation in Seattle?
My name is Paul Chapman. My wife leads a small spirituality group in our
house (something Christians might call a ‘house church’, though have
people with many different understandings of faith). As a pastor’s husband
and a father of two young girls, I am disturbed that a fundamentalists
like Mark Driscoll is indoctrinating a church of 5,000 with this rubbish.
Mark preaches that all women are good for is sex, babies, and
housekeeping. That women are dangerous temptresses. That women are weak
and easily confused.
Because no one else in the Seattle or U.S. church scene has been able to
get Mark to change his ways, a number of friends who are sick of his
degrading and demeaning attitude towards women decided to take a more
visible route.
Do you have any personal experience with Mars Hill? Have you attended a
service?
Yes. My current faith community has welcomed several women recovering from
abuses at Mars Hill. Many other churches around Seattle similarly have
dealt with the fallout of Mark Driscoll’s abusive and corrosive actions.
In addition to talking with ex-members, reading his blog, listening to
sermons online, etc. I have attended a service at Mars Hill. The
hour-and-fifteen-minute sermon was on the effects of sin. Most of the
references were to ‘sexual sin’. Most of the references to ‘sexual sin’
were focused at women. Mark Driscoll stated in that sermon that he talks
so much about sex because the bible does (it really doesn’t!).
What kind of action are you planning for December, 3? Are you picketing
Mars Hill services?
We will be protesting the Mars Hill Ballard campus from 10am to 11:30am on
December 3. One blogger suggested we pummel him with pink prada handbags,
but we’re intending to keep this a non-violent protest. We’ll be holding
signs quoting Mark Driscoll’s demeaning words. A few witty slogans would
be great: “Mars Hill: Official Church of Stepford!” “Salvation for Women:
Sponsored by Betty Crocker.”
We do not want people shouting at the church attendees or threatening
them. We think that exposing the crap Mark heaps on women is shocking
enough.
Do you have any idea of how many people you're expecting? Is it a secular
protest?
It is hard to say how many people are planning to show up as this is a
grass-roots effort organized over the internet.
While many of the people who have said they are coming are from a
Christian background, we welcome anyone who cares to treat women as equal
members of the human race, whether or not they are part of a faith
community. Mark Driscoll’s demeaning and degrading attitude towards women
isn’t just a religious issue. That said, while we do understand that many
people are concerned about the Paradox, we ask that people not come to
protest that issue. Save that one for their evening service!
We’re asking pastors who believe in gender equality to cancel services on
Dec 3 and show up as a sign of solidarity with these women who have been
abused by Mark Driscoll. Some people at the protest may be praying or
singing.
But since our focus is exposing how Mark Driscoll does not want to treat
women as equal members of the human race, we’ll welcome anyone who is for
justice.
If people are not able to make it, we’re asking that they do two things:
1) Write the Seattle Times and ask that they drop Mark Driscoll as a
columnist.
2) Tell your friends and coworkers who are Christians to vocally oppose
Mark Driscoll’s fundamentalism
What's the ideal outcome of the December 3 activity?
1) To see Mark removed from his position of influence in Seattle. We are
ashamed and sorry that our faith is associated in the minds of the people
of Seattle with such bigotry. We would like to see Mark fired from his
position as a columnist with the Seattle Times.
2) To see him lose his power within the Christian Community at large.
Unfortunately, Mark is seen as a bit of a wonder boy within Evangelical
Christianity and trains hundreds of pastors to act like he does. We would
like to see Evangelicals become so outraged over his disgusting comments
that he is no longer given a platform to spew his garbage.
3) Mark has surrounded himself with men. Ultimately, we would like to see
Mark fired as Pastor of Mars Hill and forced to work in the real world
where he has to interact with women on a regular basis.
Anything else people should know about 'People Against Fundamentalism?'
Yes! We’re a small, grassroots organization standing up for justice
against the pastor of a megachurch.
We hope that other people in Seattle and around the U.S. are inspired by
what we are doing to stand up against the corrosive and dangerous effects
of fundamentalism. In this case, Mark demeans women & he uses the bible to
do it. This is what fundamentalists of all faith do: use their holy book
to demean and oppress people. We do not want to return hate with hate or
violence (as we advocate non-violence) but to remove the tolerance of hate
in our society.
We like chocolate. Particularly chocolate bunnies.
