We wanted to get behind the direct action against Mars Hill because we too believe that Mark Driscoll is a woman-hating weirdo and it annoys us that he has such a huge congregation that seems to consider itself so punk rock. We kind of doubt that that they're particularly ill-informed on the issue of their pastor's attitudes towards women (uh, doesn't he speak directly to them every week?), but there's a chance that there are some hipsters in that crowd that legitimately don't know what's going on (always a safe assumption of hipsters) and if we can help get some people together to raise awareness of the brand of Christianity that's being practiced at Mars Hill, great.
We sent a few questions to "People Against Fundamentalism" who are organizing the action against Mars Hill as we mentioned earlier this week with the hope that even though "People Against Fundamentalism" seemed nearly as wacked as Mars Hill and smelled a bit of professional jealousy with regards to "Misogynist Mark," we'd somehow be proven wrong when they got back to us. We wanted to be assured we weren't joining someone else's religious war. Well, they haven't responded to our questions (which you can find after the jump).
From "People Against Fundamentalism":
We're looking for a splashy media effort (print, television, blogs, etc.) so that Mark the Misogynist and his Fundamentalism are visibly exposed for the destructive force that they are.
Hey guys, you know what's a good way to start off a "splashy media effort (print, television, blogs, etc.)"? Actually responding to blogs! King5 isn't going to just call out of the fucking blue, but if they do we hope you can drop ten minutes on them for the cause.

I've listened to Driscoll for years, now, and don't think it is fair to call him a woman hater. (The article is lacking in any evidence or quotations, for that matter.) Weird, sure, but aren't we all? :)
His theology, best I can understand it, is quite simple and seems to be the opposite of woman-hating. He has spent a ton of time at his church focusing on the men -- the theory being if you teach the men to BE men, women won't have to play both the part of the man AND the woman.
What do I mean? Take the single mom that has to do it ALL. (She's a hero, by the way.) But, it isn't the way it is supposed to be, is it? Why else would (secular) research keep proving how important it is to have a (good) father in a child's life? So, what do you do? Teach the women to deal with it, or try and fix the root cause? (The men.) Driscoll's approach has been the latter, and personally, I applaud him and Mars Hill for it.
I don't see how teaching men to love and honor their girlfriends and wives could be construed as woman-hating, but maybe I am missing something....
