Burner Is Toast

darcy_fp.jpgVia the Slog, Hominid Views, and The Seattle Times, Darcy Burner conceded the election for Washington's 8th District congressional seat to Sheriff Dave Reichert last night.

The party-line-toers at Northwest Progressive Institute say Burner shouldn't concede so we can "see what the remaining voters whose voices have not been heard yet have to say." Huh?

After a press conference this morning, Burner will go from darling of the partisan left to just another underemployed former Microsoft manager and part-time law student. But, on the bright side, she'll spend a lot less time talking to old people, and the Stranger's Eli Sanders will stop leaving gooey messages on her voicemail.

  • Stuart there is about 23 months until election day 2008.

*PLEASE* do not concede. If anyone knows Darcy, please pass this advice along. Tell her not to buy into the absurd logic that graceful concession has some sort of value. It doesn't. The only thing people remember is who won. The only thing that matters is who is in charge. Fight it. Demand a recount. Uncover missing ballots. Sue. DO. NOT. CONCEDE. And if you already conceded, TAKE IT BACK if legally possible.

  • I got her campaign email last night mentioning her upcoming speech and was a bit worried about it. It is a damn shame but she came the closest any Democratic candidate has ever come to winning that seat. The 8th CD is basically designed to be permanently Republican and she proved that it was not invulnerable.

I hope she runs in 2008. Dave Reichart is not going to be able to do much in congress until then since Bush is not going to have a congress that will carry his water.

I have met Darcy several times and I look up to her. I hope she has a long political future ahead of her.
