Mark Frauenfelder of the awesome site Boing Boing and the awesome magazine Make Magazine (which Seattlest has contributed articles to) will be in town tonight at the awesome Seattle gallery Roq la Rue. "Retrorama!" opens at the gallery this evening and Mark has some paintings in the show. We sent him some email asking about it and his replies are below.

Lots of people know you as a Boing Boing contributor and Make Magazine founding editor, but as an artist...not so much. Have you had many shows? Are you looking to do more in the future?

This is my first gallery exhibit. I've sold prints before, but the this is first time I'm selling originals. I definitely want to do more shows in the future and have started thinking about ideas for my next show.

You're kind of a San Francisco guy, but to my knowledge you haven't shown this work there. Why does Seattle get first crack?

Actually, I live in Los Angeles. The reason I'm going with Roq La Rue is because the gallery owner, Kirsten Anderson, asked me and I greatly admire her. She edited the best book on the kind of art I'm interested in (Pop Surrealism, published by Last Gasp), and the artists she has in her galleries are the best. So it was a big honor to have her invite me.

Is there a common thread that runs through your visual art and your writing and editing activities?

I think so. I love things that evoke a sense of wonder. When I did these paintings, I tried to create scenes from stories that viewers could create in their minds. Why has the girl in the red helmet poked her finger in the little creature, and why are they both happy about it? I have my own story for that, but I think it is better not to say what it is and to instead let the view create a story around that moment in time.

How long are you going to be in Seattle? What are you going to do besides your opening?

I'm only here for one night. I have two little kids at home, and it is important for me to spend as much time as possible with them. My 9-year-old gave me drawings for some of the paintings I did, and we have a lot of fun together.

(Uh, San Francisco, L.A., it's all the same, right? California? What's the difference?)
