I've Fallen and I Can't Get Up or Call a Time Out

Lifecall-1.jpgDon Ruiz of the News Tribune's Washington Huskies Insider alerts us, at the bottom of this informative post about Pac-10 basketball, of a long-overdue rule change in NCAA basketball:

There also will be a few new rules changes -- or at least new emphasis -- this season. Most notably, players must have possession of the ball and have their feet planted in bounds before they can call timeout. No more of those desperation timeouts while sailing out of bounds.

The flying-out-of-bounds timeout and the on-the-ground-after-just-recovering-a-loose-ball timeout have long vexed Seattlest. They inadvertently reward poor ball-handling.

From the way this is described, it looks like the trapped-in-the-corner timeout will still be allowed, however. In Seattlest's perfect world, you'd be prohibited from calling a timeout when under duress. But, you know, life isn't perfect. So in college basketball officiating, as in romance, we'll take what we can get.

Those desperate flying-out-of-bounds timeouts were part of what makes NCAA ball great. My brothers and I used to practice launching ourselves off the driveway, grabbing a ball, and making a rudimentary T. I guess those days are over now.
