Which is it, newsmedia types? Safe or not safe? Earlier this week there were 18 billion articles on the freshly-released City Crime Rankings report that listed Seattle as the 262nd safest city in America. 262nd? That's not safe at all! Used to be a time when Seattle was safer than Portland, at least. No longer true, according to this report. Portland is the 249th safest city in the Union. Our region's safest city is Bellevue at 56.
Then we spent our Halloween dodging bullets and knife blades like Neo in the Matrix. Not safe. Security measures are being considered left and right and to hear some people tell it we're one more high-profile shooting away from white flight.
And then we found out today that another poll ranked Seattle as the safest city in the country. What the hell.
City officials were quick to tout the survey results, with Mayor Greg Nickels giving credit to the work of the Seattle Police Department."While Seattle is certainly not free of crime and violence, this ranking is something everyone can take pride in," Nickels said in a statement released Tuesday.
Relax, Captain Safety, the people who should be taking pride in the results of this survey work in the PR department, not the Police Department. This was a Gallup Poll that questioned random citizens around the country about what they thought was the safest city in the country. Honestly, we don't feel like Seattle is a dangerous place and just because a shooting took place in the UD instead of the ID over the weekend we don't think it indicates a change in our odds at a sudden and violent end. Still, the 262 ranking was a surprise and the disconnect between that poll and the one that ranks us #1 is pretty odd. How does some random guy in Iowa come up with Seattle when asked what he thinks is the safest city in the country?

Friendly Folk-Pop for the Kids: Hey Marseilles at Vera This Saturday

All this talk of "white flight" "shootings in the UD instead of the ID" "white folks dressing up as strong african american characters for halloween" it's getting tiring. Work out whatever issues you have at home not on your work blog. I come hear to read about what's going on in Seattle, not what Dan's liberal issue of the moment is. Sorry.
"white flight" was a joke about the extreme reaction to recent violence, but I feel the rest of the things you listed fall well under the umbrella of "what's going on in Seattle."
