Olympia, Hotbed Of Liberal Communism
Amy Goodman, host of independent news program Democracy Now!, spoke at a benefit for KAOS and Thurston Community Television last night in Olympia. Seattlest got stuck on the I-5 but got there five minutes before the scheduled event time; Goodman, coming from SeaTac, was not so lucky, and arrived about half an hour late.
In the meantime, the sold-out crowd heard Chaplain James Yee describe conditions & treatment of prisoners at Guantanamo Bay Naval Base. Yee was arrested for espionage and other serious crimes...charges that were dropped after he spent 76 days in jail.
Goodman has been touring the country promoting her book Static for months. She looked tired but had enough energy to deliver a fire-breathing excoriation of mainstream media outlets and the current administration, drawing a standing ovation from the crowd.
The crowd also gave a standing ovation to the parents and sister of Rachel Corrie, who appeared on Democracy Now! last week to discuss the opening of the play 'My Name is Rachel Corrie' in New York and happened to be in attendance.
By the end of the night we were ready to join the ACLU and the Green Party. A circulated petition to impeach Bush might have our name and address on it. Our customary cynicism/pessimism didn't return until we had driven almost all the way back to Seattle.
Good times!
