Halloween Shootings

mini-police.jpgHalloween + an extra hour of drinking = four shot and four stabbed over the weekend. Two people were shot as they smoked outside of a fraternity party on UW's Greek Row and are expected to survive at Harborview. They were apparently bystanders to some kind of armed conflict in a nearby alleyway where 12 casings were found. "Officers could hear gunfire continuing in the distance," when they arrived on the scene.

From the Seattle Times:

"Stuff happens like this," said Kristopher North, 21, a UW senior who was driving down the alley moments before shots were fired Sunday. "Kids get kicked out of a party or they say something to the wrong people and before you know it people are shooting at them. ... Quite often you get a lot of people that come from the Ave or come from other parts of Seattle and come in here."

Another man, who didn't want his name published because he didn't want his fraternity's name associated with the crime said there have been more fights and break-ins in recent weeks.

"I don't know if that had anything to do with it, but it's just we've had a lot of sketchy people lately," said the man, a UW junior and house manager at a fraternity near where the shots were fired. "It's been worse this year."

Later two more people would be shot outside Tiki Bobs, possibly in drive-by fashion, but the newspaper accounts don't really say anything else about it. Purely speculation here, but the MSM codeword "drive-by" usually indicates black victims and perpetrators. Apparently that's worth a lot less reporting than two white kids accidentally shot at the University of Washington. Before we get too wrapped up in our liberal guilt, though, let's remember that this is just a guess.

Do bars in Seattle stay open and continue to serve alcohol when the clocks are turned back an hour, returning to Standard Time? I always thought that was illegal in Washington. Also, I remember the bars I've been to closing at the first 2:00 AM, but that may just have been because the bartenders didn't want to put up with serving for another hour. Anyone know this for sure?
