Don’t say we didn’t warn you, but we did. Unfortunately some of you failed to heed said warning about yesterday's Harvey Pekar reading and now we will have to spend hours de-friending all of your sorry asses on myspace. We know this because one of our agents went to this event undercover last night and filed the following surveillance report:
[Series editor Anne Moore], and a cartoonist that I don't know, came off like idiots. It was packed, and everyone loved them. They sold a ton of those lame compilations. The other cartoonist guy was making pronouncements about what cartooning means, and who is relevant. [A local cartoonist who will remain nameless] turned around to face [name redacted] and I, and he had his eyes shut tight, as if to erase that guy from his mind. The guy said that it's a great time for comics, since so many cartoonists (he means cartoon hobbyists, in my opinion) are making comics about everything under the sun. Five minutes later he said that it's sad that no cartoonists are doing anything really original now, and that cartooning can be about anything, but everyone does the same few things. For his part, his original idea was an autobiographical childhood story.
Anne said that they would consider web-comics, but good web-comics are animated in some way, or have a web interface to advance the story (I'm interpreting here, since she isn't clear at all when she talks) so that in effect makes all worthwhile web-comics un-publishable in books, and the best ones are already published in books (!!!!) anyway. Then, later, she admitted that she rarely sees web-comics. Same old arrogant fugly asspants.
Someone had given the group a pie, so while people were asking her questions, Anne would just eat bites of pie, and speak to the crowd with her mouth full. So arrogant.
[Seattle cartoonist David] Lasky came off better than any of them: Soft-spoken, but funny. He wore a jacket and tie, and combed his hair. NONE of the others combed their hair. It was an evening of dull conversation about mediocre comics from mostly dilettante creators.
