Dissecting Grey's Anatomy: M&Ms Aren't For Kids

318002.jpgEp 4's credo is first do no harm. Its the Hippocratic oath, but surgeons, Meredith opines, are hippocrites.

In a guilt-fueled turn at the griddle, Izzy contemplates her $8.7 mil. While manically making breakfast, she nearly pours OJ over the check. (Note the 5 Spot menu on the fridge). She's more than OK, she's rich, she says. And she's going to cash that check just as soon as she cleans out her hospital locker. Uh-huh.

At SGH, Cristina is reading, what's that? the Northwest Life section of the Seattle Times?! As Izzy denies she thinks of her newfound wealth as blood money, she shifts the onus to Meredith, who has yet to tell McDreamy that she's broken up with McVet.
Meanwhile, Callie wakes up with McSteamy, only to find her celly is blowin' up from George. Is that your bf again, McSteamy wonders. "You were sexier when you weren't talking," she replies.

True dat. Aren't they all.

Strong silent Burke is back, but guilt's cloud covers him, too. He wants to tell the chief his hand is not back, but doesn't get the chance. To the chief, he's a much-needed leader. Only his ladyfriend and intern Cristina knows the truth about his compromised confidence.

All of this will come to bear on the dreaded, and much anticipated monthly M&M meeting. (That's morbidity and mortality, not candy-covered chocolate that melts in your mouth.)

For once, all the interns are invited to the ass-kicking and mea culpa that is the M&M, and Cristina is so psyched she picks up snacks (sadly, not a half pound of M&Ms). But turns out her BF is on the stand, and the patient? why it's #34986-- none other than Denny Duquette!

The interns get to watch as Burke handles the questions, but everyone knows he was being operated on with a gunshot wound, and Dr. Bailey takes over, cross-examined by an aggro fellow doctor as the interns, including Izzy in the doorway, squirm.
Consequences people. M&Ms aren't for kids.
In the divorce lawyer's office, another M&M is underway, as the former Drs. McDreamies perform an autopsy on their marriage. Derek is convinced that while Addison dallied, his "relationship" with Meredith was the coup de grace to their union. He insists she take the brownstone AND the Hamptons home, while he gets nothing but his Seattle trailer. Has our guy gone loco, or just local? Why is he going EZ on the soon-to-be ex-wifey?

Addison then has to return to surgery, to try to separate a couple of middle-aged realtors, divorced from each other, who are still hooked on each other...literally. He got his penile piercing caught on her IUD. She got chocolate in his peanut butter! Again! The two can't stop going at it like "high school kids at the prom," Meredith tells McDreamy, a not-so-subtle, accidentally-on-purpose reference to their own illicit prom night tryst.

When the pierced man has a heart attack while doctors are trying to separate the couple, Dr. Burke is called off the bench. He and Cristina devise a plan in which she's quite literally his right-hand woman.

Seeing Cristina perform a flying whip stitch (really? just like sewing up the thanksgiving turkey?) on an open heart gives Izzy a pang. She's got "two good hands" Burke later informs her, and she should feel guilty she's not using them. If only she had ONE good brain!

Chief tells Miranda that her pregnancy-induced empathy makes her a better doc, and she goes on to tell a breast-cancered mom it's OK to resent her feeding baby from distracting her from the tumor (she thought it was a 'milk dud,' Karev sez), but get on with the mastectomy already.

Callie blows off George again. McSteamy proves he's McSlutty, bedding Addison after telling Derek that he wasn't just her fling, they had a relationship, too. So there. Then in one of their many elevator encounters, Meredith tells Derek she's dumped Finn for him, but all Derek can say is OK.

Ok, then. Burke is not OK. Izzy, despite her uncashed check for millions, is not OK, and neither is either divorcing doctor. They are not OK, and that, folks, is OK. That thing about do no harm? It's way too late for that.
