There are very few public meetings which Seattlest regrets not attending. Very few. In fact, last night's Seattle Public School Board meeting might represent the very first time Seattlest has ever been convinced by the morning RSS that we made a mistake in skipping a meeting.
Here are some of the highlights from print accounts of the meeting:
-"Hours of public comments from angry parents and community members over the latest closure proposal" - Superintendant Raj Manhas revealed his new new absolutely positively final for reals this time school closures list earlier yesterday. People were pissed, as you would expect, despite the fact that Roxhill was left off the closure list.
-A chant of "Stop school closures now!" boiled up from the huge crowd.
-A "racially charged shouting match" ended in a fight between a white guy and a group of black guys in the center of the room. We absolutely have to see this as the newspaper accounts are vague here.
-How do you respond to a racially-charged melee at a School Board meeting? If you're Don Alexander you lead the crowd in a verse of "Go Down Moses (Let My People Go)."
-The Board voted 5-2 to postpone all closures indefinitely.
The meeting should be broadcast at 7pm tonight on channel 26 of your Comcast dial.
