Aural Pleasures (10/17 - 10/23)

music.jpg

Tuesday 17th

>>> Beirut at The Croc. This 20-year-old wunderkind from Albuquerque is the latest entrant into Who Wants To Be a Gypsy Rock Star Millionaire?
9pm;$10

>>> The Secret Machines at The Showbox. The sonically huge psych rockers will be performing tonight in the round, each member of the trio on an elevated platform on the venue floor. If nothing else, it's something different.
8pm doors; $14adv/$16dos. All ages

Wednesday 18th

>>> The Joggers at The Crocodile. After a long hiatus, The Joggers return to support their Solid Guild followup With a Cape & Cane. We're hoping the new material rocks as hard as "Hot Autism," a finely crafted piece of fun wrapped in a guitar rock wrapper.
9pm doors; $8. 21+

>>> Electric Six at Neumo's. Fire in the disco! Fire in the Taco Bell!
8pm; $12 adv. (All ages in balcony only. Bar w/ ID)

Thursday 19th

>>> I AM SAM Benefit Party at The Showbox. SAM describes this benefit's performers as a zeitgeist of local talent. With performances from Common Market, "Awesome", Choklate, and SunTzu Sound, it's hard to argue with that statement.
8pm doors; $25

>>> Ghostland Observatory play two shows at The Crocodile. Pumping, thumping power pop. KEXP's John Richards is freakin in love with this band. So are we. That might mean you should be too.
All ages show at 6:30pm, grown-up show at 8pm; both shows are $12

>>> Edie Brickell and the New Bohemians at Neumo's. These Bohemians aren't so New anymore, but c'mon, how could you not have had a crush on this woman back in the "What I Am" days?
8pm doors; $22

Friday 20th

>>> The Thermals at Neumo's. The headliners are Cursive, but it's all about The Thermals. We'll be bouncing all over the place at the front.
8pm; $13.50adv/$15dos. All-ages

>>> Wayne Horvitz and Bill Frisell at Triple Door. Two legendary jazz composers for one very low price--we'll miss it because our friend is getting married in NYC, but you shouldn't. Horvitz is playing with his quartet, Frisell with the Odeon String Quartet. Part of the Earshot Jazz Festival.
7/10pm; $20. BUY TICKETS: 206-838-4333

>>> Enter The Haggis at The Tractor. Punk rock on bagpipes. Beat that.
9pm; $13 adv/$15 dos. (Friday and Saturday)

>>> Juana Molina at The Croc. Songs in Spanish with acoustic guitar and electronic elements as sung by a lovely Argentinian lady? Yes please.
9pm; $10 adv/$12 dos

>>> The Paperboys at The Tractor. Someone Seattlest used to work with really REALLY loved these guys and if you're an old weird guy chances are you will too. Actually, there must be something to it because they're also playing the Tractor Saturday night.
9pm; $15

Saturday 21st

>>> Wynton Marsalis Quartet at The Paramount. Since most of the great be-bops are now late great be-bops, Marsalis is probably America's best known jazz musician (unless you count Harry Connick, Jr., which we wouldn't unless you want a punch in the neck). He's talented and charismatic, and always assembles a fantastic group. This could be the best jazz you can hear. Damn wedding. Marsalis' performance is part of the Earshot Jazz Festival.
8pm; $35-$75 through Ticketmaster

>>> Creeping Time and Skitterpup at Conor Byrne . Bluegrass on speed.
9pm; $5

>>> The Ruby Doe at The High Dive. Please ignore the other lame suggestions for this day and go see the Ruby Doe kick ass in Fremont.
10pm doors; $7

>>> The Hold Steady at The Crocodile. The Boss is back! In indie rock form.
9pm; $12

Sunday 22nd

>>> Citizen Cope at The Showbox . Folk-hop acoustic-rock soul man.
8pm; $22.50 adv/$25 dos. Friday and Saturday are sold out, but there are still tickets available for Sunday

>>> Garfield High School Jazz Band w/ David "Fathead" Newman at The Triple Door. The city's hottest high school band (seriously, they are really good. Bull-DOGS!) play a tribute to former Seattle resident Ray Charles. Saxophonist Newman--who was part of Charles' band in the '50s--will sit in. This should be a blast. Seriously--how can you schedule a wedding on the first night of the World Series and the first weekend of the Earshot Jazz Festival?
7/10pm; $20
