The Viaduct is closing this weekend for a semi-annual inspection, which we like to imagine as Mayor Nickels walking up to and attempting to shake a support column. Thumbs-up, DOT, looks like we're set for another year or until such time as a replacement tunnel is funded!
While the official inspecting is going on, there is an opportunity for some private citizen-types to get a close-up look at the Viaduct decks. The Alaskan Way Viaduct and Seawall Replacement Project is hosting a couple of walking tours on Saturday, which will include an official recounting of the two Viaduct replacement options and their strengths and weaknesses.
On Saturday the 14th there will be 45-minute tours running between 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. Because the inspection is the top priority during the closure, space at this event is limited. Those who wish to attend must RSVP to viaduct@wsdot.wa.gov or leave a message at (206) 269-4421. The deadline to RSVP is Friday, October 6. For safety reasons, no children are allowed on the tour.
Astute readers will note that Friday, October 6 has already passed. Seattlest sent an email anyway in the hopes that that deadline is like every other Viaduct deadline.
