Art Brut/We Are Scientists Show Review
Seattlest had the chance to take in quite a few good shows over the past week. Saturday night was no exception. It was just last March when we first saw Art Brut here in Seattle. They were still relatively unknown at the time, having just released their debut album Bang Bang Rock & Roll in the States. After hearing their album, we weren't sure then they could pull off the live show. After their 2nd stop in Seattle, it's clear that Eddie Argos and company haven't skipped a beat.
We Are Scientists started off things in proper fashion and a normally "statue-like" Seattle audience finally started moving. Admittedly, we weren't expecting much. We had heard some previous recorded sessions that left us wondering if their live show matched the material on their album. We were pleasantly surprised when we heard a fantastic set on Saturday night. They ripped thru a quick play list of our local radio favorites and a great rendition of Art Brut's very own "Bang Bang Rock & Roll." Included was some good-natured ribbing at the expense of Art Brut's Eddie Argos (at least they didn’t call him fat). They had huge sound for a 3-piece and the lead singer deftly switched from wailing feedback guitar solos to singing, all without missing a beat. In the end, they had the audience hopping for what would prove to be a perfect entrance for Art Brut.
Art Brut. What is it we love about this band? After a long year of touring it's obvious Art Brut has refined their act considerably since their last Seattle appearance. From the second they step on stage, they've got swagger. Eddie Argos commands his band thru an action-packed set ("Ready, Art Brut?") leading with the obligatory AC/DC classic "Back in Black" before starting right into "Formed a Band." The band and the crowd had amazing energy and Art Brut even played a few new songs we hadn't heard. Eddie has a great way of changing up the lyrics to keep things fresh and his on-stage antics always get a Seattle crowd moving. The uninitiated may think that they just lucked in to their success, but make no mistake; Art Brut knows exactly what they are doing....
