The Silence of the Library

Due to the high volume of suggestions received, we are not able to notify you when items are not selected for purchase. If an item is selected for purchase, a hold will be placed for you, usually within two weeks.
So declares the library's Suggestion for Purchase of DVDs, CDs and Audio Books page. We can probably assume, then, that the library has decided not to purchase Weeds: Season One on DVD, as we requested maybe six weeks ago.

Maybe they're still thinking about it. Maybe they're waiting for more requests to come in. Maybe if you requested the same DVD (performer: Mary-Louise Parker; Release date: July 11, 2006), critical mass would be reached, and we could check it out of the library one of these days. At least with books, if they opt not to buy the title, they'll request it via interlibrary loan. At least then we know.

But we're curious. Weeds gets good reviews: "Colossally great!" says Tim Goodman in the San Francisco Chronicle. "Damn fertile soil for a comedy!" says Heather Havrilesky on Salon.com. "Makes mincemeat of conventional TV taboos!" says Ray Richmond in the Hollywood Reporter. "I like it!" says Seattlest Seth in conversation.

So what is it, SPL? What do you have against Weeds? Is Red Dragon really more must-have when it comes to Mary-Louise Parker's oeuvre? Does Showtime fly that far under the radar even in Seattle?

So many questions, and all the library can manage is the stony silence of fine print.

Maybe we should just suck it up and buy the DVD. It's just $27.07 (we save 32%!) at Amazon...

Silvie and I recently watched half of the first season. We weren't too impressed.

wow... I had no idea Sunnyvale would be so openminded... Silicon Valley never fails to amaze me by it's weirdly lib/conserv fence sitting.

And 12 holds already-- popular.

I'm crossing my fingers for your library, James.

I'm pretty sure it's not because the library is skittish about the content. I'm assuming not many people have requested it -- as opposed to the first seven seasons of Cheers, which SPL does have copies of.
