Did Anyone Actually Go To The Buju Show That We Worked So Hard To Cancel?

pain7.jpg Alright, since the debate over Buju Banton won't stop at The Stranger and has in fact infected the P-I as well, and since Seattlest has been named both generally ("other city bloggers") and specifically ("Seattlest") as a contributor to the cancellation of the Buju show at Neumo's, perhaps we should say something.

I tried hard to dance around a call for Neumo's to cancel the show outright in my post because I assumed that they had booked him innocently and would lose a lot of money if they broke their contract. What I wanted was for no one to attend a Buju Banton concert innocently. Well, what I wanted was for no one to attend a Buju Banton concert at all, but since it was going to go on and there were a lot of tickets sold, I wanted people who may not be aware that "Boom Bye Bye" is about the shooting of fags to know that it was an intolerant and hateful song, because if you don't know what the song is about and you book the band or buy a ticket or a CD, then whatever. What can you do? But if you do know what the song is about and you do know that he still plays it and still stands by it and you still book the band or buy a ticket or a CD, then you're an asshole. Like if you read all the blog posts on Buju over the past few days and you still went to the show at its new location because, "he hates fags but some of his songs still rock," than you're an asshole, and if Seattlest participated in any witch hunts over this deal then Buju fans were the target and not Neumo's (The Innocent), The Stranger (The Righteous), or even Buju (The Ignorant).

The show apparently happened last night at Studio Seven instead of at Neumos where it was initially scheduled, but so far we haven't heard a single account of what went down there. Either Buju fans aren't blog readers (highly possible) or we managed to convince everyone that this show wasn't worth going to (improbable).

I like Buju and the new CD. The song he did was done 14 years ago. Let it go. Did you get the new CD? It's Hot! Like Paris Hilton.

  • This whole incident just became so disturbingly surreal as the days went on: on the one hand people calling for a boycott of Neumo's (totally justified), then when Severin decided to cancel the show, getting all that flack from so-called "free speech advocate" who clearly didn't have the foggiest idea what they were talking about.

And the trolls - who could possibly forget the sanctimonious idiots or the pathetic attempts at bomb-throwing, just to add more flame to the fire?

But, the best part were all the people who appeared to feel it was perfectly alright to condone the words and actions of a self-proclaimed homophobe, simply because some of his music wasn't overtly hateful. The old, "Hitler liked dogs and children, so maybe he wasn't so bad after all" argument.

  • it looks like Seattlest was at the show. Sort of. Just in LineOut clothing [#]. Oh, editorial we.

I was at the show last night. I wasn't really familiar with Buju Banton before, and had no idea why it had been moved. There was no indication on the neumo's website. No one at the new venue that I spoke with even mentioned the whole issue. The place wasn't packed but it was pretty full. I expect I would have thought differently about going had I known about the whole controversy.

  • That Jameson columnist tard is unworthy of his namesake. Mmmmm.... Jameson... drool drool

My favorite bit from the P-I columnist was the fact that he kept referencing ancient-history controversies:

Although I don't condone everything musicians spew -- rap group N.W.A. extols gang rape, Guns N' Roses drops the N-bomb, Eminem disparages gays, KMFDM celebrates the gun -- I hold my nose and defend their right to say it. The public can vote by pocketbook, choosing whether to buy records or go to concerts.

I think the the present tense of "extols" and "drops" shouldn't really apply to groups who haven't existed in, oh, a decade, and some of whose members are dead. But my favorite:

"I suspect Capitol Hill activists would have yawned had rapper Ice-T dropped by Neumo's to sing about killing cops."

Can people just not stop hatin' on the Ice-T? Seriously. The guy now plays a cop on Lar & Order: SVU.
