For a non-conference game, the Fresno State game is pretty big
Seattlest's top three reasons why Saturday's non-conference game against Fresno State is more important than the average non-conference game.
1) The Huskies need confidence. A win will give them some.
The UW hasn't beaten a decent opponent since November 11, 2003, when they beat then #14 Washington State. Fresno State is a legitimate (though not great) team. In fact, they are favored to win Saturday's game. The Dawgs need this win heading into Pac-10 play.
2) A win Saturday will increase attendance for next Saturday. They'll need the energy and volume of a large crowd to beat UCLA.
A week from Saturday, the Dawgs play their first Pac-10 game, against UCLA. We don't think they can win that game without the distinct home-field advantage that a vocal Husky Stadium crowd provides. Lose to Fresno State, fans will stay away. Win, and we bet attendance is at least 10% greater.
3) Fresno State's fans are insufferable and must be put in their place.
In a piece last month, we called Fresno State, a team that lost to Nevada, Tulsa, and Louisana Tech last year, "not that good." Soon, the comment box was teeming with the indignation of uppity Fresno State fans, broadcasting their inferiority complexes widely by calling our piece "stupid ass" and "illogical."
These are people that live in a city where the biggest tourist destinations are a below-earth garden and the world's second McDonalds. And they root for a team in the "WAC" conference. The Huskies are 48-5-2 all-time against current "WAC" members. Let's go. Fresno State's fans need a smackdown, Husky-style.
