Harnessing The Wind For Fun And Profit

turbines.jpg

Alternative energy in the Pacific Northwest can mean biodiesel, ethanol, nuclear, hydro-electric, pedal power or a sticker on the back of your Volvo complaining about the war, but rarely do we hear much about wind farms. You’ve seen the photographs of wind farms and they always look really cool in a kind of sterile future-topia way and you get how they work: Wind turns windmill, windmill turns turbine = electricity that doesn’t require unsavory political relationships or ass raping the earth. It’s not completely free of drawbacks, of course, and Wikipedia’s got the whole yay vs nay thing covered (it’s clean, it kills birds and trees), but we’re thinking we should get to the Seattle hearing on the Kittitas Valley Wind Power Project tonight to figure out exactly what’s going on.

Help Support NEW WIND POWER in Washington!

The state’s Energy Facility Site Evaluation Council (EFSEC) will soon
decide whether to approve the 120-Megawatt Kittitas Valley Wind Power Project (info: http://www.kcares.com), and is holding a special Seattle-area public hearing *NEXT TUESDAY* to hear your comments.

PLEASE turn out and VOICE YOUR SUPPORT for this project!

The Seattle hearing will be the ONLY one held outside Kittitas. EFSEC
will be taking brief testimony from citizens. Please use the talking points at http://nwenergy.org/docs_st/efsec.html to prepare a brief (1 or 2 minute) statement explaining why you support this project.

WHY WE NEED YOUR HELP

* We need to show that people care where their power comes from!

EFSEC usually doesn’t hold public hearings outside the county in which a facility would be built, even though the energy from these projects
will be sold throughout the state and region.

* We need to demonstrate that clean energy advocates are the majority!

A small group of Kittitas Valley residents continues to oppose this
project even though the developer responded to citizens concerns about visual
impacts by cutting the number of turbines in half, from 120 to 65. The state Department of Fish and Wildlife has testified that the project conforms to Washington’s wind power siting guidelines.

* This project will boost renewable energy development in Washington!

It will create new jobs in construction, operation and maintenance and manufacturing and provide a new source of clean energy to the region.
