We heard a rumor and since rumors are one of our favorite things to propagate (second only to "the species") we're getting off to a good Friday. Unfortunately, while there are potentially lots of good rumors surrounding the Seattle public school district (no school closures, across the board school closures, Gates Foundation bought the district) AND lots of good rumors surrounding Apple (new wireless iPod will get you chicks, Apple recalling those crusty and yellowing iPod sleeves, Jobs going to space and not coming back), this rumor falls squarely into the "meh" category.
I heard from a teacher yesterday that the Seattle School District is mandating a switch to homogenous Windows - and forcing Mac-only schools to switch as well. They think they will save on network administration costs by having just one type of system to support. But I wonder if it will cause more problems supporting Windows insecure machines vs. secure Macs?
Couple thoughts: 1) Fuck that. 2) There are Mac-only schools in the Seattle School District? We find that hard to believe. 3) You're shortchanging kids if you don't let them get classroom experience with multiple operating systems. 4) Design geeks will revolt. 5) Maybe the Gates Foundation did buy the district. 6) Although this would reduce the risk of an iBook battery going thermal and burning down a school. 7) Although that would settle at least one closure. 8) Fuck that.
