Mariners GM Bill Bavasi Blames the Troops

Bill_Bavasi.jpg

Attention class, we have a pop quiz today.

Whose fault is the Mariners' August collapse and .238 winning percentage vs. the AL West?

Mr. Bavasi, I see you frantically waving your hand! Do you know who is responsible? You do?

We're dealing with a lot of young kids that are overmatched, I guess, and some veterans that apparently are not performing up to their abilities.

You mean, Bill, the young kids you decided were ready to play in the majors? And the veterans you signed to expensive contracts? I see.

What's that? Not everyone's doing badly? Oh, good. Love the positivity. Who's performing well?

Manager Mike Brown Hargrove, you say?

[Hargrove] has "shown great patience in a bad situation, which is not an easy thing to do."

No, not easy at all. Which is why Hargrove was such a great hire, Bill! With the roster you've assembled, you need a guy who'll handle the inevitable 20 consecutive losses to division opponents with grace. And Hargrove has the experience you need... he's on his way to his sixth consecutive losing season as a manager!

After all, you wouldn't want a manager that would get all wound up and inspire a mediocre team to unexpected playoff glory, would you?

Here's our next question: Do you know your ass from a hole in the ground?

What's that, Bill?

lou was a great manager, but m's fans seem to still irrationally believe that hiring him again will change everything. with the current makeup of the team (young hitters, young pitchers), lou would potentially be as bad as hargrove.

beltre has a .901 OPS since june 1.

LOOOOOUUUUUUUUUUUUUU! Sorry, but I love the guy. He'd have ripped Beltre a new asshole about 14 months ago.

it's not really the young players' fault, outside the black hole that is CF this year. nobody expected sexson's avg to drop 50 points (on pace to have similar HR/RBI as last year), or beltre to stink in april & may. the amount of plate appearances given to everett (and the signing of everett at all) can solely be blamed on hargrove. in the end, though, the m's have an atrocious pitching staff and they have to stop waiting for meche & pineiro to get it together. the trading of moyer was one step closer to reality.

his nice words for hargrove was pure PR. grover is gone as soon as the season is over. it's just unfortunate we have to wait that long. please stop feeding the casual m's fan's continued desire to bring back lou. it isn't going to happen. hiring a competent manager would be nice, though.

  • Is it just me -- or has anyone else noticed the resemblance between Bavasi and a fat, mottled John Malkovich?
