We Went to a Sports Game

dp.jpgBefore we delve into our account from the World Cup Final(?) between Real Madrid and DC United we have to give a quick mad love shout out to KING 5's Don Porter.

Like anyone on a road anywhere in Seattle yesterday, we were sitting in our car cursing traffic. On the corner of Second and Pike, we found ourselves trapped in a sea of cars and buses right behind KING 5's Don Porter. Just then KING 5's Don Porter made a move that many Seattle drivers wouldn't even think of attempting. Seemingly boxed in by the traffic, he spotted an opening and aggressively swerved through a narrow gap in front of a line of plodding busses from a stopped position. We followed him and were home free. If it weren't for KING 5's Don Porter, we would probably still be squeezing our steering wheel and screaming at every other driver on the road.

God Bless you KING 5's Don Porter.

beckham-real-madrid-1.jpgFor years we have been dragging lady friends to sporting events. These lovely ladies knew nothing of the teams, players, or more obscure rules. While we have suffered watching the local squads in person, they have been able to enjoy themselves through non-game related conversations, the general excitement around them, and recognizing players. Last night that was us.

We've never been to a sporting event in Seattle where we could only name two of the players. We still have no idea who scored the goals; however, we did see Freddy Adu dribble the ball around people, and David Beckham kick a soccer ball towards the net. We missed his corner kick because we were trying to set up a photo—a momentary mood set back.

Our group talked about our day, joked, and drank seven dollar beers while keeping one eye on the game. Most of us couldn't tell Sergio Ramos from Ben Olsen, but we cheered, heckled, and chanted for Preki all the same.

When halftime (something we recognized) arrived, the Sounders' coach came on to the field and pleaded for soccer fans to support the local team. Security ushered him away, and no one was hurt.

It turns out sports can be more enjoyable when you don't care who wins. Something we will never be able to appreciate again. [Ed Note: And don't forget our other report on the game.]
