Rocked By Pirates

festv_bucklebackinblack.jpg

Because Friday night had been a late one, it was nearly noon before Seattlest awoke on Saturday. Dazed we were and wondering, Had we really been rocked by pirates last night?

Yes, yes we had.

Those thieving, snarling, dirty darlings raped and pillaged their way into our hearts Friday night. The setting: Ballard’s own Sunset Tavern. The pirates: Captain Bogg & Salty.

So who are these pirates? -Think Jack Black, Axle Rose, ACDC, with a dash of Run-DMC. Now dress them in pirate costumes, give them instruments, and commence with the rock.

From the rolling, thumping, fist-pumping Pieces of Eight, to the surf-rock anthem I’m a Pirate, to that fantastic rap song we can’t find anywhere online, these guys shifted effortlessly from one musical genre to the next, each time leaving us with a big dumb smile and thinking, WTF? In point of fact, we realized about halfway through the set that we hadn’t stopped smiling since these swashbuckling scallywags first took the stage. We were hooked. (And other lame puns!)

The Portland Tribune calls them "The finest all-ages pirate rock band anywhere." We agree. And believe us – we’ve seen a lot of all-ages pirate rock bands.

Another highlight to the evening: Miss Mamie Lavona: the Exotic Mullata and her White Boy Band. Miss Mamie was stunning as always with her dazzling voice and her oh-so-wonderful curves. She pulled at our heart-strings with her sultry serenade and made us blush with her playful demeanor. She shook her maracas and then she shook her maracas. Our favorite part was when she and her White Boy Band performed The Mariner’s Revenge Song by The Decemberists.

Oh yeah, “Awesome” played too. Need we say more about them and their inherent awesomeness?

i can't fault you for your taste, but i'll say that after a few opening notes, i spent almost the entire pirate set out on the sidewalk & was happier for it. yes, standing alone without beer was better than ruffled shirts & songs about scurvy. i just wasn't in the mood for schtick rock.

How sad for you.
