Mariamentum

joemaria.jpgJoe Lieberman may have a very bad day.

Polls say he'll lose the Democratic primary to Ned Lamont, who besides being filthy rich after inventing the shoe, is also using local political consulting firm Moxie Media to design his mail (whoop-whoop).

Lieberman has angered left-leaning Nutmeggers with his support of the Iraq War. Our own Maria Cantwell also voted for the war and has refused to back away from that vote. Yet, instead of fighting for her political life like Lieberman, Cantwell will roll up a Fidel Castro-like percentage of the vote in September's primary.

Cantwell only has one Democratic opponent, Hong Tran. So unknown is Tran that this panel of in-the-know local journalists didn't know if she was a man or a woman. Not the type of challenge that has Cantwell shaking.

If Connecticut's liberals can mount a serious challenge to their pro-war Democratic senator, why won't Washington's?

There is a great deal of leftie anger at Cantwell. She was booed at a March rally, and didn't even show-up at another with special guest star Russell Feingold. Democratic organizations are sending her angry letters, and some aren't endorsing her.

So we ask again, where is Washington's Joe Lamont? Or is Hong Tran simply Lamont without millions of dollars?

In 1994, when I worked for WashPIRG going door-to-door asking for money, they called her Maria "Can't-vote-Well."

Which is not that funny, but does show how long there's been liberal dissatisfaction with her. It's a damn shame we aren't using this year, which will be a lopsided Democratic landslide, to put a strong liberal voice in the Senate.

or perhaps a more obvious answer - cantwell's support for the war hasn't been unwavering to the point of lunacy. she's definitely in favor of getting the troops home sooner, and even spoke out against permaneny bases being created there.

beyond that, maria votes the right way most of the time (alito, bankruptcy, schiavo, net neutrality), doesn't provide cover for republicans to claim that there's 'bipartisan support' for bad legislation, and doesn't publicly accuse her own party of treason. it's not just about the war.

i have my problems with cantwell & don't trust her all the time. that said, she's a reliable democrat doing mostly good work. the anger against her is single-issue and isn't coming from a broad swath of the entire party's voters in this state, unlike your inappropriate example. we don't need a lamont.
