The Things We Learn from Google

Sister cities or identity thieves?

"Kenosha is the Seattle of the midwest."

"Halifax is the Seattle of Canada."

"Champagne is the Seattle of France."

"Austin is the Seattle of the south."

"Bergen is the Seattle of Europe." Unless it's Amsterdam.

"Boston is the Seattle of the east." Or maybe it's Ann Arbor.

Iowa might be "the Seattle of hardcore."

Most mysteriously: "Machinima is the Seattle of media."

I was told before moving out here that Seattle was the Boston of the west coast.

I want to know what makes a place "The Seattle Of" anything.

Overutilization of fleece? Confusion about the difference between "roundabouts" and "traffic islands"? Terrible baseball team?

Funny. People in Seattle haven't talked in those terms since "Alki; New York by and by."

I noticed people talking in those terms first when I moved to Ann Arbor for grad school. I think it indicates a deep lack of civic self-esteem. (although a lot of those references were more about rain than everything else).

Anyway, I'm from Seattle. I don't give a crap about anywhere else. Poor Seth prolly wants to go home.

Hey, I invented that logical form for the area! How about "Lake City is the Renton of Everett", or "Auburn is the Burien of Kent
, or even "Mercer Island is the Vashon of Bellevue!" I got a million of 'em!
