Online communities are a tricky thing. They're notoriously difficult to manage, but once things get settled into a groove -even if it's an odd little groove with rules and mores known only to its participants and opaque to the outside world- things tend to move along more or less smoothly. And then someone comes along and fires all the volunteer moderators and things go haywire.
Such was the case with the Seattle LiveJournal community over the weekend. We're not going to pretend we know what goes on over there on a day to day basis, but apparently the poplular moderators were given their walking papers Saturday night in leiu of a new crowd. Alas, none of this is visable on the site anymore due to some quick-draw thread deletions, but if you could see into the depths of Seattlest's RSS subscription you'd see the action, the complaints and the 50,000 postings of tubgirl.
Gawk away at what remains and take a peak at what once was. If you were only home late Saturday night you would have seen it all go down live...

sigh... I guess no amount of timely deletions can erase a couple hours of stupid drama.
That night was actually a lot of fun, especially after we managed to get control of the community back.
That community used to be like the old LJ. College kids helping out each other. Until the LJ Drama crowd was lured there by one of their alleged victims posting there asking for help.
The drama addicts stayed and never left and when the mod of LJ Drama was made the mod of the Seattle community, his fans took over, snarking on anyone in hopes of a glance from the mod.
The other mods are fans too, and your typical "mod is god" guys. Anyone that has seen the community go down the crapper and mentions that is banned.
The saddest part about Evan, as one of the founder of LJ, throwing up his hands at the whole thing is that it's an example of how LJ has gotten far away from the college kids with common sense, naivety, and forward-thinking ideas. Now it's just another blog spot on the Internet, subject to the same http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2004/03/19 target=new>"Normal Person + anonymity + audience = total f***wad" And the LJ Seattle community had led the way.
Katherine, might I suggest you have your glasses cleaned? They seem to have gone all rose-colored on you.
I can't wait to see who gets the blame for unpopular bannings and other community decisions now that the mod in question is out of the picture.

I just started taking the community with "a grain of salt". It's funny if you look at it in that way. The internet isn't supposed to be serious, regardless of whether it started out that way or not. There are other Seattle communities to go to, if you really feel the need to belong to one.
Times have changed, Katherine, and not just on LJ. The internet has a wider audience now. It's not just back-patting college kids anymore.
One can either wax nostalgic or you can adapt. Your call, but I find those who live in the past don't do much in the present and grow very little in the future.
I'd very much like to see into the depths so I can see who was posting the oversized blank gifs and tubgirl so I can make sure they were banned... if you have a link, I'd be very appreciative...

I don't recall saying the community or the Internet is serious business. And yes, since mediacrat posted there, you have no choice but to take that community with a grain of salt. And that's the point of the lament.
I was commenting on the way it used to be and not a lot of people in there have even had LJs long enough to have seen it. If it gets more rude and dumbed down as a change, then people don't have to adapt. They move on. We just hated giving up an favored old spot to the people that have it now.

i am so over his bullshit, i went over to where jameth lives and stood outside so he could see just how over him and his idiot followers i am.
i am going to the kareoke bar that he goes to tonight so i ca sing a song to show him that he can't hurt me anymore because i have healed myself and cannot be hurt by anyone online ever again.

unfortunetly, i am very tired from all of the medications one of my many doctors has me on or i would go there in a hertbeat to prove just how over this i really am.
my doctors are such heroes. they can atest to the fact that i am unable to climb the stairs to get to jameth's deck but they will tell you that i am over the drama.
