Sonics, It's Over. Go Blazers.

Ron Silver may have been a bad guy in TimeCop, but he had a better seat at the NBA draft than the Sonics' draft pick. Yes, with their highest draft pick since 1989, the Sonics picked a guy who was sitting in the stands.

When David Stern announced the Sonics #10 overall pick, Mouhamed Sene, he added, "He's here!" And, sure enough, down came Sene out of the stands, passing actor Ron Silver as he did so. Ron Silver. We turned off the draft at that point--who knows, maybe the Sonics took Silver with their second round pick?

Now, in a league that's trending toward speed and agility, the Sonics own the rights to three big men who have precious little of either. Greg Anthony of ESPN plainly stated that this pick wasn't about talent, it was about economics. And we started to get pissed. We weren't the only ones. Here are the comments from SonicsCentral.com, which was liveblogging the draft:

"I’m going to find a bridge to jump off of." "gag" "If I was at the EMP, I would have ordered two shots of Cyanide and O.J." "What the F#EK????" "there was alot of talent there simmons, brewer, and williams…. and the FO takes the guy who will not play for the next 2 years awesome " "IDIOTS!!!" "I hate this pick." "Clearly, we are not interested in winning." "This pick is Yinka Dare re-visited."

We were about to join the mob. But then we realized that two of our favorite all-time basketball players are now just down the road in Portland. Brandon Roy, from Garfield High (what what!), and coach Nate McMillan. Not to mention Seattle Prep's Martell Webster. Now THAT'S a Seattle team.

Why worry?

So, next season, we can pony up $160 for NBA Season Ticket, and take a few trips down to Portland to watch the new boys. And go to Powell's. Nothing wrong with that.
