World Cup Notes

On one hand, the U.S. team gave an encouraging performance in their 1-1 tie with Italy over the weekend and managed to avoid the label "mathematically eliminated" at least for another few days. On the other hand, being excited about a tie with the boot nation in any endeavour is downright unAmerican. Outside the confines of our little Group E, the soccer powers continue their relentless march into the later stages. Germany, England, Argentina, Brazil, Spain. Boooor-ring. Are there any wee teams out there that can knock out a giant? It appears not.

We did find a great new venue for watching World Cup games this weekend, though, that we've been dying to tell you about since Saturday. Seattlest's Friend's Couch! Not too crowded, but an enthusiastic hard-core was in attendance in front of a huge HDTV. Service is shit, though.

In the Seattlest World Cup Challenge D. Henderson is listed first in a group of five front-runners who have 21 points so far in the first round, but a lot of people have 20 or 19 points. It's still anyone's game.

And the Sounders had their well-formed little heinies kicked on national television over the weekend. Luckily for them, the few eyes that generally watch televised soccer in the U.S. were probably watching the World Cup.

Happened to me too, James. I think I'm overthinking it. Today argentina v holland. I love the total football but no one will beat the argentinians in this whole tournament. Easy pick. Maybe they'd rather play Portugal over Mexico, though. Maybe they'll both be playing it soft. Maybe they'll rest people. Holland then. Or a draw. I've been suckered into picking a lot of draws. And this is why I suck at this.Dan

I'd just like to point out that MustBeatJim up there is a friend of mine who I challenged to play, who knows nothing about soccer and probably hasn't watched a single game. I, meanwhile, have watched every game and am doing very, very poorly.

  • Wow, I've impressed myself by doing far better than I anticipated. Looking at the remaining games in Round 1, I don't expect the field to start separating too much, unless there are some significant upsets.

My guess is that Round 2 is where the players are going to be separated from the wannabees.

  • Well, my picks in the world cup aren't going the way I would want them to, but I'm having fun trying my hardest and having a decent excuse for watching the games.

Currently, I'm cheering for Ecuador. I'm looking forward to the Ecuador v Germany game to see how group A pans out, but I'd love to see those guys go all the way. Germany isn't going to be easy, though.
