For Your Consideration: This Weekend at SIFF

siff 2006.jpg

The end is near. Soon SIFF will be but a fading memory. So if you've been putting it off, this weekend is the last chance until next year for you to get some festival action. As an added bonus, on Sunday night at the Broadway Performance Hall, there will be an encore presentation for two of the films (one short, one full-length) that end up taking home SIFF awards. If you missed 'em the first (and second) time around, be there!

Seattlest applies our well-honed knowledge of all things cinema to the SIFF catalogue in order to point out some notable films playing the final weekend:

· Expiration Date A Seattle-made film about a young man who must face his destiny: he's going to be killed by a milk truck. Only rush tickets are available. (tonight, 4pm @ the Egyptian)

· Quinceañera This year's big winner at Sundance, it's a not-so-sweet fifteenth birthday for pregnant Magdelena when her parents kick her out. There's no one to turn to, except her great-granduncle and her gay cousin. Only rush tickets available for tonight's show; some tix still remaining for Sunday's. (tonight, 6:30pm @ the Egyptian; Sunday, 4:30pm @ the Egyptian)

· House of Sand There's stunning cinematography aplenty in this Brazilian drama featuring real-life mother and daughter Fernanda Montenegro and Fernanda Torres, as well as the music of Seu Jorge. Only rush tickets available for tonight's show; some tix still remaining for Saturday's. (tonight, 7pm @ Pacific Place; Sunday, 1:15pm @ Pacific Place)

· Time to Leave It's happy fun time for a young Parisian photographer when he finds out he's dying, in this latest film from esteemed director Francois Ozon. (tonight, 7pm @ the Neptune; tomorrow, 1:30pm @ the Neptune)

· Backstage Another Frenchie, this one about the symbiotic dysfunctional relationship between a singer and an adoring fan. (tonight, 9:30pm @ the Neptune; Sunday 3:30pm @ the Neptune)

· Strangers with Candy If you like the TV show, you'll probably like the movie. Before the gala screening, there's a Jerri Blank costume contest, and afterwards there's a party. Only rush tickets available. (tomorrow, 7pm @ the Neptune)

· TV Junkie We saw this unflinching portrait of addiction (and egotism) at Sundance. (tomorrow, 9:30pm@ Broadway Performance Hall; Sunday, 1:15pm @ Broadway Performance Hall)

· Pierrepoint You'd be wise not to mess with Albert Pierrepoint, as he was the Queen's go-to hangman for much of the 20th century. What a career. This dramatization tries to get into his head. (tomorrow, 9:30pm @ the Egyptian; Sunday, 9:30pm @ the Egyptian)

· Sneak Midnight Movie We have it on good authority that this mystery movie is a much-buzzed-about animated film from a highly-regarded indie director, but that's all we'll divulge. (tomorrow, midnight @ the Neptune)

· Monster House Another animated feature, this one about that creepy house in the neighborhood that comes to life and starts eating everything. (Sunday, 11am @ the Neptune)

· The Science of Sleep Yes, it's not as strong of a film (nor as touching) as Eternal Sunshine, but the latest offering from auteur Michel Gondry features some inventive use of stop-motion animation and similar artsy techniques to convey the weird world of dreams. It'd almost be worth paying the $30 ticket fee just to hear the wee French director discuss his process. We love him almost as much as we lust after Gael Garcia Bernal. Closing night party follows the film. Only a few tickets remaining. (Sunday, 6:30pm @ the Neptune)
