For Your Consideration: This Week at SIFF

siff 2006.jpg

The final full week of SIFF is upon us. It's time to get some last few films before the sun sets on this year's fest. This week's got a couple great music events as well: Friday night, Portastatic will be on hand to perform a specially-commissioned live score accompanying circus freakshow-themed silent film The Unknown (more about that in a few days).

Meanwhile, Thursday night's the Face the Music Rock Party at Neumo's, featuring approximately one shit-ton of local bands, all of whom will play covers with a SIFF connection, for only $6. To wit:

Seattle International Film Festival and Samsung Mobile present the Face The Music Rock Party—an evening celebrating the music of the SIFF 2006 Face the Music documentaries featuring songs by The Pixies, The Police, Leonard Cohen, Harry Nilsson, Bjork, Sigur Rós, Devo, and more as interpreted by some of Seattle’s best local bands. With twelve music documentaries featured in this year’s festival, the bands have each selected and perfected works by artists featured in the films that explore their lives and music....

Be sure to catch: Sean Nelson’s collaboration with the 7-piece chamber pop ensemble "Awesome" for an incredible Harry Nillson medley (special appearance by Amy Blaschke); Mountain Con’s rendition of George Michael’s "Faith" and a Leonard Cohen set; 2005 Stranger Big Shot winners, RazRez, covering The Police; Carrie Akre (Goodness, Hammerbox) and Dave Dederer (Presidents of the United States of America) collaborating on a surprise set; Trespassers William covering Icelandic artists Sigur Rós and Bjork; Special Devo tribute songs in honor of Mark Mothersbaugh—Devo frontman and film composer (Rushmore) hosting a SIFF Master Class (6/16, 7pm at Broadway Performance Hall); Members Only DJs Kristin and Amy spinning between sets.

On to the movies! Seattlest applies our well-honed knowledge of all things cinema to the SIFF catalogue in order to point out some notable films playing this week:

· The Trials of Darryl Hunt If you ever think you're having a bad day, take a breath, remember Darryl Hunt, and kindly reevaluate. Dude was wrongly sentenced to life in prison (murder was the case that they gave him). Compared to that, your life's pretty sweet. (tonight, 4:30pm Broadway Performance Hall; Wednesday, 6:45pm @ Broadway Performance Hall)

· Hello, Dolly! Restaurateur extraordinaire Tom Douglas hosts the screening of this classic 1969 musical. As an added bonus, anyone who purchases a ticket to the film may attend a "fantastic pre-screening Soiree with cocktails and canapés in his recreated 'Harmonium Gardens' across the street from the Harvard Exit at the DAR beginning at 5:00pm." RSVP at DollySoiree@seattlefilm.org. (tonight, 6:30pm @ Harvard Exit)

· In Bed Not about fortune cookies. A sexy Chilean couple meet at a party, go home together, and then learn about each other in the titular locale. (tonight, 9:30pm @ Pacific Place; Thursday, 4:30pm @ the Egyptian)

· Three Times Only rush tickets are available for the final screening of this trio of romantic Taiwanese vignettes. (tomorrow, 6:30pm @ Harvard Exit)

· We Go Way Back A woman meets herself as a thirteen-year-old. Coming-of-age-related wackiness ensues. This Seattle-made film won the grand prize this year at Slamdance. (tomorrow, 9:30pm @ the Egyptian; Saturday, 1:30pm @ the Egyptian)

· The Refugee All Stars After fleeing war-torn Sierra Leone, these talented musicians formed a band in neighboring Guinea before returning to their homeland to let the healing begin. (tomorrow, 9:30pm @ the Neptune)

· Americanese An Asian-American couple break up; she moves on and dates a white guy, while he spends time in her apartment when she's out. (Wednesday, 6:45pm @ the Neptune; Saturday, 4:15pm @ Harvard Exit)

· Man Push Cart It's tough being Pakistani in post-9/11 Manhattan. (Wednesday, 9pm @ Harvard Exit)

· Madeinusa A local girl falls for the wrong guy in this devoutly Catholic Peruvian Western. (Wednesday, 9:15pm @ Pacific Place)

· Walking to Werner This documentary follows the journey of Northwest filmmaker Linas Phillips as he walks the twelve hundred miles from Seattle to Los Angeles just to meet Werner Herzog---an act that parallels Herzog's own walk from Munich to Paris to visit an ailing friend. (Thursday, 6:30pm @ the Neptune)

· Twisted Love A collection of six short films, none of which are your typical love story. Only rush tickets are available. (Thursday, 7pm @ Broadway Performance Hall)

· Who is Harry Nilsson (And Why is Everyone Talking about Him?) Poor Harry Nilsson. In the span of just a few years, he went from hanging out with the Beatles and making critically-acclaimed albums to losing his voice, his health, and his record contract. Still, even he would acknowledge he didn't have it as bad as Darryl Hunt. Way to bring it full circle. And scene. (Thursday, 9:30pm @ the Egyptian; Saturday, 11am @ the Egyptian)
