T - 2 Days Until The World Cup

wordlcup.jpgShow of hands - How many people are ditching work on Friday? Not that there aren't a million reasons to fail to show up to work on any give day, but the start of the World Cup should keep more of you than usual away from the cubicle. 9am Friday morning is the first match of the tournament with Germany set to eat Costa Rica like a plate of schnitzel. Should be fun to watch someone from our qualifying group get destroyed in front of four fifths of the world's population. Here's a helpfull hint for your World Cup fantasy pick 'em group: Germany will win that game. Alright, we gave you the first one - Now go sign up for the Seattlest World Cup Challenge. What did we say we'd give the winner again? Sounders tickets, possibly. Obviously that pales in comparison to the reflected athletic glory and acclaim that will be awarded the winner, but in case you needed that extra bit of motivation.

If you've already signed up now is a good time to log in and make sure that you've got your picks set at least through the weekend. Don't be the guy trying to drunkenly coax his Blackberry into browsing the crap-heavy ESPN site at the last minute because he just realized he forgot to finalize his picks.

I'm taking the day off...meet you at the G&D bright and early, everyone!

I'm not sure about Friday yet. Ideally I'd take the month off, but I'm afraid that's not going to happen. I need to look at the schedule and decide how many and which days I can devote before I commit to Germany/Costa Rica.

i havent researched it yet, but ive always used the world cup as a great excuse to drink early. is this okay? i mean, 4 years ago i was 15 and i would be drunk by 4:30 with friends before school. acceptable, seattlest?

kcip, please! It's almost not acceptable to be sober past noon at cup time. If you're doing an early morning match it's ok to start with a few cups of coffee, but there's no shame in ordering that first pint as soon as the morning gets into double digits. Image what the scene's like in Germany at the same time - Would they fault you for a couple of early beers?

Beware, though. The G&D is a world unto itself. When you stumble out of the place at 1pm with your shirt off and a scarf tied around your head shouting all kinds of "wooooo!" and the like the rest of the world may have no idea what you're on about. Keep the early morning drunken behavior inside the pub where it belongs.

Also, I just crunched your math and you're still not old enough to drink morning, noon or night...in the States. Get thee to Germany.

NOTE TO ALL: The G&D's turning their parking lot into a beer garden, so you can enjoy the sun, and the fruitball.

Just spotted this story about our local boy on the USSF website:

I'm not taking the whole day off, but I am going to not-so-mysteriously disappear from work around 8:45. This World Cup will require my TiVo to be running at full throttle, but I insist on seeing the first goal live. I figure the game will end 3-1, so I'll put the over-under at 22 minutes. However, it's worth noting that the last 10 opening matches had a combined 9 goals, and three of those were in 1998, and given the matchup maybe we should resign ourselves to the likelihood of the nil-nil.
