Mother Jones Blames Orcas For Ocean's Woes

mini-oceanvoyager.jpg

Mother Jones magazine has a web page up that chronicles five threats to our oceans and gives information on how to defend against them. As you can see from the map we can blame polar bears, Washington D.C., fish pirates (heh, heh, whatever that means), "the dead zone", and our very own orcas. Dammit, when are those orcas going to stop ruining the ocean?!

mini-mercury.jpgActually the site isn't blaming the orcas for anything. Insinuating, maybe, but not blaming. It's blaming mercury for the decline of the orcas which makes a lot more sense. Orcas - good, mercury - bad. There's a drawing for kids on how Mercury gets to you and a ton of really cool links including one to a flickr pool or San Juan orca shots, pics from the Center for Whale Research, and this ridiculously great mercury map of the United States that names a whole lot of names.

KIMBERLY-CLARK CORP. in Everett - 1.3 lbs mercury per year, SHELL OIL PRODUCTS US PUGET SOUND REFINERY of Anacortes - 11 lbs mercury per year, CITY OF TACOMA STEAM PLANT NO. 2 - 35 lbs mercury per year, LAFARGE N.A. in Seattle 78 lbs mercury per year, etc, etc.
