Kemp Trying for Comeback, Payton for Ring
The most electrifying athlete in Seattle history is trying to get back into basketball.
Shawn Kemp's in the Denver Nuggets tryout camp, and he's there for a reason--coach George Karl. So reports the AP.
"He challenged me a few years ago to become one of the best players in the league, and I accepted the challenge," Kemp said. "That's one of the reasons why I wanted to come here. I knew he [Karl] wouldn't take it easy on me. He hasn't taken it easy on me since I've been here."
It is apparently impossible to write anything about Shawn Kemp without mentioning that he has 97 kids, or whatever, but we'd like to point out that Genghis Khan fathered so many kids that he has 16 million descendants in Asia. What's wrong with adding some of the freakishly athletic Kemp genotype to the species, huh?
While Kemp tries to get back into ball, his longtime alley-oop partner Gary Payton, is trying to win a ring with the Heat.
After flirting with backing Dallas for the Jason Terry Franklin High connection, we're going for the Heat, hoping that Payton gets the ring Nate McMillan's injury in the 1996 Finals denied him. (yes, we still contend that if McMillan had been healthy, he could have checked Michael Jordan and the Sonics would've won).
We've avoided watching Heat games this year--there are too many fouls--so we aren't really sure what Payton's role is. He can't hope to post up Jason Terry, but maybe he'll school the Mavs young point guard, Devon Harris, with some crafty veteran know-how. At the very least, he'll be the best trash-talker on the court. Go Glove. Go Heat!
