Sounders Get One Point in Weekend Series with Portland

The Sounders played a home-and-home over the weekend with their hated rivals, the Portland Timbers. Often, rivalry games devolve into foul-fests, but Friday's game, at least, had a good tempo. Both teams screwed up unscrewupable scoring chances--though the goalkeepers had some pretty bold plays. The Sounders' Chris Eylander made five saves, three of them gasp-inducing, for his third shutout in a row.
The Sounders' electrifying rookie Cam Weaver, subject of this discomfiting video montage, created some scoring chances in the 1st half, but was less effective in the 2nd. The Sounders' other striker, Roger Levesque had a one-on-one chance with the Portland goalie in the 35th minute, but couldn't finish.
The game ended 0-0.
On Sunday, Eylander--a rookie out of UW who's been sharing the job--extended his scoreless streak to 285 minutes. But Portland scored in the 35th minute, and went on to win 3-1.
The 1 point weekend throws the Sounders into a three-way-tie for first in the three-team Cascadia Cup, an informal competition between the Vancouver, Seattle and Portland USL teams.
