Gregoire Gives State Dangerous Option
Governor Gregoire, apparently unaware that her job could be taken from her in two and a half years, is leaving it up the state's National Guardsmen whether they want to patrol the US-Mexico border. President Bush is sending 6,000 National Guard members to the Southern border to end the problem of people entering the country illegally.
Showing the kind of bold decision-making that caused her to get outpolled by John "My position on the war has been clear from the start. First I [SNORE]" Kerry, Gregoire told the Times, "If I have volunteers who want to, we will support their request."
This makes us nervous; first, the state is on the verge of our biggest natural disaster since Richie Sexson. For this reason alone, we need our troops here helping keep the peace Evergreen State style. If you give them the option of skipping out on this cold and cloudy summer weather for the fun in the sun southwest, well guess where they are going to go.
We love Alki, but it doesn't compare to San Diego's beaches this time of year.
Also, what about all those who are wise to the president's plan, and decide to enter America's now unsecured border? Those who opt to head south and right around the world will be able to waltz in through the Canadian border. We all know there are perfectly good smuggling tunnels going unused.
Finally, she is setting a dangerous precedent. Are National Guard troops now allowed to just pick and choose their assignments? This could lead to someone volunteering to blow up every Bed and Breakfast in Utah or a year long deployment at a Saturn dealership keeping customers safe from unscrupulous mechanics.
Governor Gregoire, you are putting this state in grave danger. Keep the National Guard here, or in Iraq, where they can keep us safe from God's wrathful tsunamis, smuggling tunnels, and the group of folks behind 9/11.
