As the NBA's 10th worst team, the Sonics had about a 1/25 chance of getting one of the top three picks, and about a 9/10 chance of getting the 10th pick. They did not pick up an ace "on the river" however (if you have been unemployed in the past year you will know what this means), and so the tenth pick is theirs.
This is a weak draft, and there's a reason for it--it's the first year that high-school players are banned. Guys that might have come out, principally Indiana's Greg Oden, who'd probably be the first pick, and Seattle Prep's Spencer Hawes, who might be next, are going to college.
Being the softies that we are, we'd love to see the Sonics trade up to pick Garfield High's Brandon Roy. But the Sonics are run by Wally Walker, so they'll probably trade up and draft Keith Van Horne.
The Sonics' biggest need, in our view, is either a slashing guard who can score, or penetrate and dish to create shots for Ray Allen, or a big bruising rebounder that can take some of the defensive pressure off of our young centers. We think Jordan Farmar fits bill #1, as for bill #2 we'd love Shelden Williams.
Mock drafts are sprouting up like our lawn, and at least one of them will probably be right. So one of these dudes will probably be a Sonic in a month. We expect they will rent, not buy.

Around The -Ists This Week

Uhhhhhhhhh, I think maybe one should checks ones facts before one makes such statements about ones former choice to be Vice-President:
Edwards formed the One America Committee and was appointed director of the Center on Poverty, Work and Opportunity at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and is also now an investment banker in New York.
the first mock draft i saw was on CNNSI & they had the sonics picking up jj redick. it's the stupidest idea yet (redick's teammates will not be setting multiple picks for him to weave around in order to get off a single shot) which makes it a realistic possibility for wally walker.
the sonics front office has an affinity for drafting white guys. watch it happen again.
The Redick pick isn't that crazy. He backs up Ray Allen and is kind of Ray Allen light. In times when you need a lot of offense you go three guards and run Allen and Redick through tons of screens. If he's the best available player there, you probably take him.
The Shelden Williams pick doesn't make sense unless you are not going to make an effort to re-sign Wilcox. What would Williams bring to the table that Wilcox and Collison don't?
Ridenour is serviceable at the point and you are comitted to Watson and his contract. Unless you find someone to jettison Watson to, or are ready to give up on Luke, drafting a point guard is just silly.
No way do you take another center. They are young and deep there. Unless they've got a trade to make that would be just a stupid pick.
Andrea Barganini is never going to be there at #10. But even if he is, he's quite similar to Radmonovich. Remember how well he and Lewis played next to each other?
What you really need is a combo guard who can play minutes at small forward in a pinch and who can really get to the basket. Brandon Roy is perfect, but chances are he's gone. If he's there though, you have to take him. I'd be suprised if he doesn't win ROY next year.
I like the Ronnie Brewer pick. He's perfect. He's Damien Wilkins only better. He can play PG, he can defend, he's a decent shooter and can get to the basket. You can use him to back up three positions. He's not as good as Josh Howard for the Mav's, but he's similar. Best of all he's almost assured to be there at #10.
If we could just get a guy who could reliably drive to the basket (like Antonio Daniels used to), I'd be happy. Stop the defense from spreading out toward Ray.
