Postman Blog Winning Awards Out Of The Gate

mini-TrophyTennis.jpgThe Western Washington chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists retreated to their hidden bat cave this weekend, probably performed some elaborate initiation rituals for new members involving chalices, robes and candles and then handed out some lucite. We covered this last year and blah blah blah it costs money to be considered for awards so a lot of people don't submit and it's hardly the Pulitzers anyway. We weren't going to say anything about it at all, but a few things are noteworthy regardless, particularly in the Online Media arena.

The coveted Best General News/Commentary Web Log category went to... David Postman! What the fuck! Now, we've read Postman's blog and it's been great and it looks like it'll only get better, but he's been on the air for less than a week! And he wins an award for that? Brian Chin's gotta be pissed! The P-I also got stiffed in the Best Overall Affiliated Website category where they came in second behind some podunk TV station out of Spokane. That station does have a cool site and they won a bunch of other awards for it, but it's nowhere near the scope of what the Post Intelligencer does online.

AND they got screwed out out of the Creative Use of the Medium (Adaptation, of course) award which the Seattle Times won for something that looks ok but no one remembers (Unearthing Tse-whit-zen, anyone?) over the P-I's awesome Urban Forests Under Seige series. That's it. The P-I's done. They get no respect at the SPJs because they're as good as gone.

There are also a bunch of other nonsensical categories that show how little the SPJ gets the interweb and almost all of them have the word "adaptation" in the title because god forbid someone should produce anything specifically for this internet fad.

Man, it's been a week and already you're goign to crown him? Are you also on the SPJ panel? It's been good, yeah, but it's been a week. Let's give him six months.

A week in, Postman's blog is already better than any of the other politics blogs out there--better than Slog because it's one person's voice and thus has more focus.

And better than HorsesAss or Sound Politics because it isn't propaganda.

Ah, it said "Postman's Trial Blog" and I thought they were talking about a practice run of "Postman on Politics" or something. There was no link provided.

Well, that's a fitting Seattlest-style welcome to the internet, anwyay.

Thanks for the kind words about Postman on Politics, but that's not what the SPJ award was for. That was for the reports I did last year during the governor's election trial in Wenatchee. And Lucite? I get some Lucite? Cool.
