Postman Blog Winning Awards Out Of The Gate
The Western Washington chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists retreated to their hidden bat cave this weekend, probably performed some elaborate initiation rituals for new members involving chalices, robes and candles and then handed out some lucite. We covered this last year and blah blah blah it costs money to be considered for awards so a lot of people don't submit and it's hardly the Pulitzers anyway. We weren't going to say anything about it at all, but a few things are noteworthy regardless, particularly in the Online Media arena.
The coveted Best General News/Commentary Web Log category went to... David Postman! What the fuck! Now, we've read Postman's blog and it's been great and it looks like it'll only get better, but he's been on the air for less than a week! And he wins an award for that? Brian Chin's gotta be pissed! The P-I also got stiffed in the Best Overall Affiliated Website category where they came in second behind some podunk TV station out of Spokane. That station does have a cool site and they won a bunch of other awards for it, but it's nowhere near the scope of what the Post Intelligencer does online.
AND they got screwed out out of the Creative Use of the Medium (Adaptation, of course) award which the Seattle Times won for something that looks ok but no one remembers (Unearthing Tse-whit-zen, anyone?) over the P-I's awesome Urban Forests Under Seige series. That's it. The P-I's done. They get no respect at the SPJs because they're as good as gone.
There are also a bunch of other nonsensical categories that show how little the SPJ gets the interweb and almost all of them have the word "adaptation" in the title because god forbid someone should produce anything specifically for this internet fad.
