Ass, Grass or Cash: No one rides for free

Hitch-hiker.jpgThe clock is ticking on Seattlest's monthly trip to the gas pump as that needle slips closer and closer to "E" (or "R" as Seattlest's car inexplicably calls it). We probably could have saved ourselves a few bucks by going last week, because local prices seem to be higher every time we look (which, when you fill up once a month, is not really that often).

The current low price listed in the Seattle area on SeattleGasPrices.com is $2.96. To get that bargin price you're headed for the Exxon station at 5235 Delridge Wy SW. Ouch, Delridge Way... But, at least your in the city. You can also hit the 7-Eleven at NE 125th & 15th NE for $2.99 gasoline to stay below $3/g.

Can't afford $3 a gallon? Well, first, we're guessing you can. But, ok, you say you can't. You won't, maybe, and we get that. Same diff, though. You can't. Time to start letting strangers into your car, or, alternately, getting into the cars of strangers. "I've never taken this route to downtown before."

* Erideshare.com: Decent selection of rides in the area although the website needs some work.

*Carpoolworld.com: Slightly better selection with a slightly worse website. Looks like they want you to sign up for a membership.

*Rideshareonline.com: Metro's official program. Ok interface.

*City carpool parking: Seattle DOT's carpool parking program. This doesn't hook you up with a ride.

*S.T.A.R: This is a service that looks like they want you to actually pay for something. Nice website, but you're probably better off at the pump.

*Bus: King County Transit. Get used to it. This is Seattlest's preferred mode of transportation.

The R on your gas gauge stands for "reserve."

Still kind of silly, I suppose, but when you get to R, you know you're using the "reserve tank" and you only have 1.5 gallons left or whatever.

Yeah -- ride the bus or your bike and you don't have to worry about goofy car stuff. :-)
