The Prius is actually bigger than the Mazda. For more practical purposes though, I'd grab a used Honda Accord 4-cylinder. Bulletproof powertrain, and they are pretty fun to drive. If you need room for the kid, a Subaru product (Outback) would be good too.

Dude have you ever driven in a Prius? They are quite nice and are not really small. I drive a Neon 4 door and the Prius actually seems roomier.

While these would be attractive options were I at a different stage of my life, I'm not lugging a 7-month-old around on the bus and light rail. Or even in something as small as a Prius or Smart Car. Even if I were willing, my wife would veto the option. And she'd have every right. As a second car, on the other hand, those are attractive options, though I'd personally rather have a Mini.
