Roosevelt High's Marcus Williams, now at Arizona, has decided to stay with the Wildcats for at least one more year. (If you happen to pay $75/year to subscribe of ArizonaAthletics.com, you can watch the press conference. College athletics--exploitative? Not at all...makes sense that the university makes money off of a fantastically-talented ballplayer telling the media he'll stay in school.)
The announcement means there will only be one former Metro Leaguer drafted by the NBA this June. Last year, there were two (blogstar Nate Robinson and myspace star Martell Webster).
Also in this year's draft, only one Marcus Williams. The Connecticut version is projected as a top-ten pick.
Our Marcus Williams, a 6-7 swingman with tremendous athleticism and a sweet shot, explained his decision thusly to the Associated Press:
"It came down to me wanting to go into the league and be effective and walk in with a kind of confidence and swagger that I am ready to play at a high level."
Coincidentally, we're delaying our entry into NBA draft for the same reason. We think the necessary swagger will come from a new technique we're working on, called "dribbling without looking at the ball."
