Serious Seattle Science Scene, Sorta

alien.jpgThere are some amazing, talented scientific minds at work here in Seattle. Sadly, barring some recent high-profile exceptions, they don't get much media time. Instead, who do the press turn to when pimping a story about "mysterious sonic boom sounds" with a seemingly scientific slant? Local Seattle UFO experts. Thanks San Diego Union Tribune, we'll put that on our mantle right next to all the press about the Discovery Institute.

But perhaps redemption is within reach. This Wednesday, Stephen Meyer from the Discovery Institute will be debating UW paleontologist/geologist/biologist/zoologist Peter Ward on the topic of evolution (which is "just a theory" we remind you, kinda like gravity) versus Intelligent Design. As an aside, Seattlest believes that if you feel the need to capitalize your newfangled theory, you're already operating from the realm of bullshit PR spin-land. When people talk of Einstein's work, they discuss general relativity, not General Relativity. Honestly, we're just waiting for the day that we start seeing Intelligent Design™. We trust Dr. Ward will come correct with far better arguments than that one we just made up.

David Postman, chief political reporter for the Seattle Times, will moderate the debate. Seattlest gnashes our teeth at this little detail as well, because it illustrates both how this is more a political/religious issue than a scientific one, and that the Seattle Times has sub-par science writing and coverage. Regurgitated Reuters articles about "health" issues don't cut it, and certainly aren't doing anything to help elevate public awareness of all the scientific goodness lurking in our fine city (the P-I isn't helping the cause much either). Though, we did at least enjoy getting a small peek into Peter Ward's world in this NW Magazine article last December.
