This year St. George's Day falls on a Sunday, so chances are you’ll be attending a party tonight or Saturday. The question then becomes how will you celebrate the actual holiday? Simple. Dine on an English meal.
Just because you live in Seattle doesn't mean that you can't eat inedible English food such as Shepherd's Pie, Spotted Dick and Bumper Fudge Pie. However, where to go? Well, like many great cultures, the English have combined eating with drinking, so simply stop by a local pub. Sorry Dubliner, suck it Kells, don't even look at me Fado, you had your day last month. It's England's weekend to shine.
In Seattle, we can think of at least…two.
For fans of foreign culture Epcot-style, might we recommended The Elephant and Castle in Downtown Seattle? Part of the "popular" chain of theme restaurants across the country, the Elephant and Castle will whisk you away to the motherland without ever feeling like you are there.
For those who like their atmosphere a little more genuine, there is always the George and Dragon Pub in Fremont. This popular hangout for the kids on weekends and transplanted soccer hooligans early in the morning, bills itself as Seattle's only authentic English pub. It provides a full English menu, a variety of English beers, and who is that handsome devil on the wall, why it's none other then Winston Churchill. Sorry ladies, he's been dead for over forty years.
Still not intrigued by the thought of boiled meat in lukewarm gravy served without spices? Well you're not getting off the that hook easy. Try a crumpet and some tea at The Crumpet Shop in the Market, or just some tea at The Queen Mary Tea Room north of U Village. They don't serve that Lemon Zinger or Earthberry Blend hippie crap, just the real deal--black tea with milk and sugar.
St. George's Day, it's the perfect time to fill your stomach with bangers, toast the Queen, root against Mel Gibson's side, and invite all your French friends to go eff themselves.
