The Latest About Schenkman's Piano Move

mini-piano_moving.jpgSeattlest remembers well the day we were sitting at the Victrola back bar and Byron Schenkman, harpsichordist and co-founder of the Seattle Baroque Orchestra, turned to us and said, "I've been thinking about switching to piano." Well, you could have knocked us over with a skinny decaf latte. And if you think it's not big news, tell that to the Seattle Times, P-I, and Seattle Weekly. (We couldn't find the Stranger's most recent commentary -- kinda wish there was a way to date-order the search results.)

Tonight, Byron is playing with the Daedalus Quartet, at 8 p.m., at Meany Hall's UW World Series. Tickets are $31 and we didn't arrange press comps. But do we care? Hell no! We'll pay and count ourselves lucky. You can order online or by calling 206-543-4880. [UPDATE: Crap! A $5 "web processing fee"? What the hell? And why do we have to "register" -- i.e., provide direct mail contact information -- to buy a ticket?]

The program (subject to change) includes:

MENDELSSOHN - String Quartet in D Major, Op. 44, No. 1
BARTÓK - String Quartet No. 3 (1928)
DVORÁK, ANTONÍN - Quintet for Piano & Strings in A major, Op. 81 (with Byron Shenkman)

Here's a little more about the piece Byron will be grooving on tonight. If you can't make it, all is not freaking lost. He's also giving a piano recital on May 9 at Town Hall. It's a concert -- music by Haydn, Beethoven, Bartok and Starer -- celebrating both his CD release and Town Hall's "new" 1921 Hamburg Steinway (a gift of the late conductor Hans Wolf). Tickets are $13-18 and are also available at the door.
