As the Mariners continue to stagger through the second week of the season our optimism following the 3-1 start has dropped a bit, okay a huge bit. We may need to take a break tonight since we have spent the last few games with our head in our hands.
Tomorrow night Felix pitches, which is always fun to watch, and Friday night there is an interesting pitching match up (at least until the game begins) between 43 year old Jamie Moyer and 39 year old Curt Schilling. Plus it’s always fun to watch games at Fenway, especially since Pedro can no longer make the line-up look like fools.
During Dan Wilson night we caught a few minutes of Lou Piniella’s speech, and all of the good times spent watching Mariners games came flooding back. We even began to delusionally think, is it out of the realm of possibility for Lou to end up back at Safeco?
Of course it is, he told the Times that he wasn’t opposed to managing again, but after three seasons in Tampa Bay he was not interested in taking over a developing team. Which lead to this crazy far-fetched scenario in our head. With the Phillies off to a 1-6 start General Manager Pat Gillick fires Charlie Manuel and replaces him with Piniella. He would take the helm of a contending team in a major east coast city until he can make the move to the job he covets the most—managing the New York Yankees.
The Mike Hargrove-"led" Mariners play tonight in Cleveland at 4pm on FSN.
