Rossi, Just Kickin' It

Dino crisis 2.jpgThere is kind of a lull in local politics right now. Cantwell is showing all those Ballard hippies that she has the guts to take on Enron, McGavick is raising oil money, and Mayor Nickels is getting yelled at by dog owners.

Slow times on the local politics front means that even Dino Rossi can make it into the newspaper. Well, he didn't really do anything, some AP reporter needed to write about something, so he put together a where-are-they-now piece on Rossi.

The former governor elect will be the Republican candidate for governor in 2008, and some in the party are worried that a candidate who doesn't do anything for four years is in danger of falling off the political radar.

Rossi decided against running for King County Executive last year and for the US Senate this fall. Instead he went back to work in real estate, wrote a book and is making the rounds at Republican events. Meanwhile his 2008 opponent has been the governor of a state.

In 1996 and 2000 the state GOP sent lightweights to battle Gary Locke. In Rossi they found an actual threat to the Democrats hold on the governor's mansion. We have a feeling that come 2008 Rossi won't be forgotten and the state will be in for another close battle.

  • My point is that you can't have the same election all over again in four years. The 2008 Governor election is going to be a different race than it was in 2004. Rossi is going to have similar issues that Al Gore but even worse since Rossi contested the results in a long drawnout expensive court fight that totally failed.

I agree with Jake. I voted for Rossi, but his complete abdication from politics shows that he's not really serious about leading the state.

  • Adlai Stevenson and Al Gore and Rossi who?

I think that Rossi crybaby frivolous lawsuit make him even more unelectable in 2008 as he was in 2004. by 2008 Governor Gregoire is going to have a long list of accomplishments with working with the Legislature and Senate. Also the Democratic base is going to be out big time in 2008 to vote for the next Democratic President so voter turnout will not be a problem. Gregoire is not going to face a primary challenger and raising money should not be a problem. Her re-election is going the be a breeze.

I think Rossi is a big threat for the governorship come 2008: Eventhough the policies he proposes are very much to the right, he comes off as a smooth eastside yuppie which will go over well with moderates against a shrill and homely democratic governor.
