There's a whole lot of latino going on in the park right outside our house in the Central District. Normally our neighborhood is exceptionally quiet all day, save for the sound of baking donuts from Gai's, until the little league softball or pee-wee football teams start showing up around 2:30. So we were mighty surprised to hear quite the ruckus out in Judkins Park, and peeking out we saw at least a couple hundred people in the park--more than pass through in a month, we'd wager.
Apparently it is a local rally--one of the many going on all over the country now. They're marching on to the Federal Building at 3:30, protesting Bush's proposed immigration reforms. As one woman said to our fearless man on the scene (ok, our fiancee): "Unless Bush is an Indian, he's an immigrant too." Local news media has already arrived, asking us "Why are you here?" to which we cryptically responded "Because we live across the street."
Update: Some are estimating that the numbers in Judkins park alone were tipping the upper hundreds, if not over a thousand. Hard to say exactly, but we had people standing on every inch of our sidewalk, IN our backyard, and pretty much anywhere they could find an open space to stand. Amazing. The pics below (after the jump) are from early on in the rally, we'll try to post more from later in the day when we get a chance.
