Small Things We've Noticed at the Seattle Public Library
Cool: Active/inactive holds breakdown. Seattlest noticed that now, in addition to telling you how many people have a library item on hold, the online catalog tells you the total and how many of those are active vs. inactive holds.
You can find out on the item information page (for example, if you want the Revenge of the Sith DVD, there are now 193 holds: 160 active and 33 inactive) or in your hold requests list under the Position column (which looks like this: 133 of 150 [ 112 active holds before you ]).
Grr: Account disabling when you have too many overdue items. We suspect this is not new. But we had 14 items due on Sunday, and weren't able to get there before the library closed. Monday afternoon, we discovered that we couldn't renew any of the items because our account had too many overdue out. Monday evening, when we took all items back, our automatic checkout privileges were disabled because our books hadn't been processed back in yet.
We realize the library wants to keep people from accumulating massive quantities of overdue books, but the current system seems awfully binary. Had we requested renewals 12 hours earlier than we did, it would've been no problem. (Note: we don't mind paying the fine, but it's annoying to be treated like a scofflaw.)
Boo: 1-week DVD checkout periods started on April 1. We've griped about this before. Seattlest will be monitoring our holds list more carefully now so we don't end up with full seasons of The Shield, Lost, and The Amazing Race all at the same time, since getting through any one of them in a week will be a challenge. At least inactive hold info will make that easier...
